Iris Folding
Instructions by Jane aka JM

Iris Folding is a paper folding craft that came from Europe.

With this technique paper strips are folded in half; no fancy or complicated folds are involved. The term “iris folding” refers to the lens of a camera, in which multiple moveable shutters open or close.

The starting point for the IRIS folding is the pattern.

Instructions

  1. Print out the pattern.
  2. Trace and cut out the pattern onto a piece of cardstock. This piece of card stock will be part of the main card. (You don't need the cutout.)
  3. Tape the pattern with the numbers on it onto a cutting mat using a low tack tape.
  4. Tape the cut out card stock on top of the template exactly over the pattern.
  5. Choose 4 pieces of coordinating paper.
  6. Cut the paper into strips about 1 inch by 6 inches.
  7. Fold each strip in half lengthwise.
  8. Make separate piles of colour A, colour B, colour C and colour D.
  9. Take a folded strip of colour A and place it with the folded edge of the strip towards the center of the design, along the number 1 line. Make sure you are extending the strips past the cutout area.
  10. Tape the strip to the card with a small piece of tape.
  11. Take a strip of colour B and place it along number 2 line. Tape it.
  12. Take a strip of colour C and place it along number 3 line .Tape it.
  13. Take a strip of colour D and place it along number 4 line. Tape it.
  14. You now have gone all the way around. Start again with colour A on number 5.
  15. Follow the colour sequence you have established until you finish all but the “IRIS”
  16. Using a piece of holographic paper for the “IRIS”, cover the final space.
  17. The back of the card will look very messy and needs to be concealed.
  18. Apply the “IRIS” folded design to another card.
  19. Use tape to apply the design to another card.
  20. DO NOT use glue because all the paper strips place pressure on the card.
